Have you ever been to the Pantanal in Brazil? I have. It was spectacular. But it was also life-changing.
It was 1983. I stood gazing over a magnificent rainforest stretching into the distance overwhelmed by how wonderful it was. I’m not religious at all but for me, this was spiritual. But then I heard the sound of chainsaws – and realised that the wealthy Spanish family I was staying with were cutting down the forest. Perhaps this was the moment that prompted me to become an environmentalist for the rest of my life…
Now, I’m an Ambassador for the Rainforest Trust UK. They’re highlighting the plight of the Pantanal today. They say that acres and acres are being destroyed – mostly through burning. Not only is this destroying vast swathes of habitat for the animals – it’s also directly burning them. How can we allow this to happen?
I remember boating through the waterways and witnessing vast flocks of birds, caymans lurking, capybaras sliding into the water and vibrant toucans. It was spectacular.
Please join me in donating to save the Pantanal. The brilliant thing is that anything you give will be quadrupled – your money will make a difference.
Thanks!
