Vanessa Feltz show – BBC radio London 2011-2012 (Apr12)

Having been on the programme in 2011 talking about plastic bags, I was asked back to talk about vests.  The show had seen a comment I’d made in the Daily Express about how difficult it was to get children to wear vests – but that this was preferable to turning up the heating.

I’ve been on a number of Radio 5 Live Programmes including: Anita Anand Show – as a panellist throughout the evening Richard Bacon Show talking about bottled water and plastic bags Kay Adams – talking about how to stop wasting food Steve Wright Show

Eco-Sheets – Using Recycled Plastics (Jan11)

In January 2011 I took my son Connor (far right in picture) to see the Eco Sheet factory.  Melinda Watson from the Raw Foundation came too (pictured far left) – and Amanda Barry-Hirst from Greenhouse PR.  Omer Kutluoglu, one of the founders showed us around.   They’re making brilliant use of recycled mixed plastics – turning them into […]

Speech for PAFA – Plastics & Films Association AGM (May10)

The AGM for the Plastics and Films Association was held at the Dorchester Hotel.   I was the key note speaker following David Bebee the PAFA Chairman.  With some challenges for the plastics industry, I concluded with a poem about plastic bags.  See my blog by clicking here. “Everyone I have spoken to has commented on […]

Joining Waste Watch Board (Feb10)

Recruited by Stewart Crocker, the executive director of Waste Watch, my first board meeting was early in February 2010. It’s a really exciting time to be a part of this organisation as it’s revising its strategy putting less emphasis on recycling and more on reducing the amount we consume. I think we should be making […]

Julia Hailes on recycling plastic bags (Jan10)

Jonathon Vernon-Smith, from BBC 3 Counties, rants to Julia Hailes about why he doesn’t like being made to feel guilty about using lots of plastic bags. Julia robustly responds and the debate is followed by a phone-in! This was aired on his lunch-time programme in January 2010.

Recycling plastic mountains (Nov09)

Omer Kutluoglu – Plastics recycling entrepreneur In the UK we throw away mountains of plastic waste and use lots of plywood. Apart from a small amount of plastic bottles and an even smaller number of plastic bags, pretty well all the rest of our plastic debris is discarded, never to be used again. Omer Kutluoglu, […]

Recycling Dreamland (Oct08)

Chris Dow at Closed Loop recycling  in Dagenham was enthusiastic and knowledgeable.  He describes the new plant – it won’t be fully operational until December – as a ‘recycling dreamland’. When it’s running at full pelt, this brand new factory will make it possible for a plastic drinks bottle to be chucked away at […]

Plastic recycling is not where it should be (May08)

Most plastics can be recycled but that doesn’t mean they are. Recoup have been campaigning for more plastics recycling – particularly of bottles – since the early 1990s. A long time ago I went to open their 100th bottle bank but haven’t really been involved since. So attending their conference this week brought back memories, as well […]

Biodegradable is not my bag (May08)

Chuck away plastic and it lasts forever. That doesn’t sound great, particularly for things that are only useful for hours at best – seconds at worst. And if that plastic ends up littering the hedgerows or floating around in the oceans it’s not only an eyesore but can be damaging to wildlife too. So, many […]
